Planting Potatoes

potatoe planting

I somewhat underestimated how long it would take me plant a couple hundred pounds of seed potatoes.  With the arrival of a two blade plow to the arsenal however, trenching was the solution.  The potatoe plot is in an area of the garden that previously did not have the soil broken in so there are massive root systems to deal with.  The plow manages to turn the roots over and also leave a deep enough trench to drop the potatoes into.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The good:  there are seeds in the ground, some have germinated and are growing.  There is a sprinkler setup for watering and so far weed control in planted areas is mostly under control.  The hot house poly is up and I’m getting closer to moving plants outside.

The bad: my tomatoes, eggplants and peppers.  I have still been unable to get them outside and some of them are still in the small cells.  Lack of food, sometimes water and good light is making for some not very healthy looking plants.  They are still green and alive though.  Also in the bad is all the grass I am growing in the garden, plus moles and gophers.

The ugly: the weather, still getting some very cold nights.  I left my water pump primed and a couple of nights of freezing had me worried.  Thankfully the pump survived without any damage.  The wind is also a concern, one for the hot house since it isn’t fully secured yet and two for the plants in the garden.  I’m looking at setting up some wind breaks in the garden with pallets for a fence.

The steel eyed nameless stranger right now is only saying three words that keeps the plot moving: plants want to grow

First Planting

The first direct seeded crops went into the ground over the weekend.  I started some peas, carrots, beets, spinach and carrots.  The temperatures are still dropping down to around -5 C at night so I decided to delay some things for another week.  Having no history for this early planting time it will be a learning experience to see how well everything grows.  If I could sell quackgrass I’d be in business already.
