building a chicken tractor

May 6th, 2010

With all this rain over the last week and a half it has been to wet for me to get into the garden.  I’ll probably be planting close to 2 weeks later then I had originally planned.  I’m not sure if other growers got seeds in the ground yet but I haven’t planted anything.  I decided to use untreated seed this year and given the cold temperatures and amount of moisture I think they would have rot in the ground.  I’m now waiting for the soil to dry up a bit.

Waiting to get into the garden has given me the opportunity to work on some other projects.  With the help of others, this year I am incorporating chickens into my plot rotations.  It will be a learning experience for sure and hopefully everything goes well.  We have decided to keep about 50 birds in a portable pen (aka the chicken tractor) based on the design by Joel Salatin.  I got a good start on the framing for the pen and will look to complete it in the near future.

What to do about grass fields?

disced quack grass

What to do about quack grass.  Since I’ve decided not to spray a herbicide to kill the quack grass I haven’t exactly figured out what the best way to reduce/eliminate it.  Tilling the roots just increases the problem.  I managed to pick up a couple of implements, a discer and a plow.  Both appear to lift the roots up without breaking them apart like the tiller.  I’m hoping if I can get some harrows that I’ll be able to remove a lot of the quack grass roots.  For now though I’m raking what I can (but I’m limited on the time I can spend doing this).

First Planting

The first direct seeded crops went into the ground over the weekend.  I started some peas, carrots, beets, spinach and carrots.  The temperatures are still dropping down to around -5 C at night so I decided to delay some things for another week.  Having no history for this early planting time it will be a learning experience to see how well everything grows.  If I could sell quackgrass I’d be in business already.
