and the rain continues

June 10th, 2010

Well the rain continues to fall in the prairies.  It was a small battle to work around all the rain that has passed through in order to get the tomato and eggplant transplants in the ground.  All the plants are in now and hopefully they will survive, grow and produce.  The plants didn’t go to the ground in the healthiest condition.  I had kept the plants in cold, wet and crowded trays for to long.

I basically have everything else planted (with the exception of a few rows).  Most of the seeds are germinated now but have been slow to grow with the lack of sunshine.  My first market day has been pushed back by another week.

and the dugout level gets even higher.

how quickly they grow ii

It is going to be a re-occurring theme for the next few weeks I’m sure.  The tomatoes and eggplants I started have all been re-potted and look ok for now but I’m worried they will get all weak and leggy over the next few weeks before it warms up and I can get them outside.  This post is mainly for the video just to give a sense of the shelves of plants .

how quick they grow

April 26th, 2010

I guess it is fitting that the weekend weather outside was cold, snowy and/or rainy while inside I re-potted tomatoes and eggplants.  The plants seem to have grown a quicker this year compared to last.  Maybe it is because I’m slowly learning how to take better care of them.  Instead of using straight potting soil mix this year I added worm castings to provide some extra food.  For full disclosure I do also have the plants on a synthetic fertilizer program (nothing like added blue water).  I have tried other organic solutions but they all seem to have a strong odour and until this operation moves out of where I live I’ll stick to the synthetic food (I am open to suggestions if people have tried other solutions).

My hope is these plants will not outgrow my lights before I can put them outside.  My guess is it’ll be a stretch (pun intended).  If the weather improves again to the +20′s it was last week I will try to weather the plants outside as I can.
