Has Spring Arrived?

March 30th, 2009

The pepper seedlings are up now in full force.  They just about all germinated which was very impressive.  I had planted two seeds in two of the trays since I didn’t know how successful I’d be at germinating the plants (especially when I planted them it was still -30 C outside).  Next time I’ll try one seed per tray cell.

This weekend finally seemed to bring some spring like weather.  The big garden show was also on this weekend just in time for the nice weather.

Dad and I tried to go and pick up “the summer home”, which is an old 1972 or something Ford camper van.  We got this to provide a little place to retreat into during the summer.  Unfortunately the van was still frozen into the ground and we were getting stuck with our own truck.  The good part was the van was sitting at a sheep farm.  Below are a couple of photos (maybe looking into the future…)

Pepper Seedlings

The first pepper seedlings emerged today.  I hope they aren’t to early since the outside temperatures are remaining cool and the snow has barely melted.

We also wired up another set of grow lights.  It seemed to go a lot quicker and with greater ease this time around.  We may need one or two lights more in order to start everything we can this season.  It’s a small operation but you do have to start somewhere.

starting peppers

I started the pepper plants today.  I’m not exactly convinced the method I’m using to start the seeds is the best but I guess time will tell.  Regulating the temperature is going to be a bit of a challenge.  It isn’t dropping to 30 below anymore hopefully but the grow lights are near a window that sends a cool draft during the night.

There are two varieties of peppers.  One is a regular green sweet bell pepper and the other is a longer chili type pepper but not overly hot.  The true test of the green thumb has officially started.
