The Beginning
The farming project that is currently on the go began shortly after I (Paul) acquired some vacant land. The idea was to develop the land for a place to live but it quickly became much more then that. Trent (my brother) came back from volunteering at a successful small sustainable farm and was excited to try a similar thing closer to home. It didn’t take long for that enthusiasm to transfer over to me and in the fall of 2007 with absolutely no real knowledge of growing vegetables we tilled up what we thought to be a large garden plot (and perpendicular to the neighbours fence).
The First Year
Our first year in 2008 was what we will consider a highly experimental year. In the first year however we managed to fence of a garden area (deer are a huge problem), grow some vegetables, harvest some vegetables, sell some vegetables. Likely most importantly though we took the first steps up the long learning curve about successful vegetable production.
Who Are We
The main farming is done by myself. I come from an engineering background which is a big switch into the farming practice. Trent is a trained chef, and therefore a great source of information on how the end product would be used. He helps out when he can but is busy himself operating Earth Bound Bakery and Delicatessen.
Of course the farm is part of a larger family and so I always appreciate the support from everyone that helps with this project. I call it a project but it is more likely an entire lifestyle adjustment.
Where Are We
The garden plot is located west of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Why A Webpage
This web page hopefully offers a way of connecting other people to our farm. To people that may one day buy our produce it hopefully provides even more of a connection to where your food is coming from. A quote I enjoy is “the best way to ensure high quality vegetables, is to know the name of the producer” (somewhat modified but taken from Eliot Coleman’s book ‘The New Organic Gardener’).
Enjoy the site.
