how quick they grow

April 26th, 2010

I guess it is fitting that the weekend weather outside was cold, snowy and/or rainy while inside I re-potted tomatoes and eggplants.  The plants seem to have grown a quicker this year compared to last.  Maybe it is because I’m slowly learning how to take better care of them.  Instead of using straight potting soil mix this year I added worm castings to provide some extra food.  For full disclosure I do also have the plants on a synthetic fertilizer program (nothing like added blue water).  I have tried other organic solutions but they all seem to have a strong odour and until this operation moves out of where I live I’ll stick to the synthetic food (I am open to suggestions if people have tried other solutions).

My hope is these plants will not outgrow my lights before I can put them outside.  My guess is it’ll be a stretch (pun intended).  If the weather improves again to the +20′s it was last week I will try to weather the plants outside as I can.

Germinated Seedlings

April 9th, 2010

The tomato trays were filled with freshly germinated seedlings today.  Germination percentage looks to be pretty high even with left over seeds from last year that I had questioned when they were being planted.  I hadn’t exactly put last years seeds into proper storage until well into the winter, which meant several freezing nights out in the garage.

Still waiting for majority of eggplants and the peppers tray to show seedlings.  Eggplants should come up soon but peppers could be a couple of days yet.

Peas Are Up

May 19th, 2009

peas started

Despite the freezing temperatures at night the two strips of peas I planted back in late April are up and looking good (at least I think so).  I kept digging up the occasional seed to see if the peas had germinated and far along they were.  They eventually slowly decided to come above ground and are now waiting for the warmer weather.

onions or garlic

Also coming along now are the onions and garlic.  The garlic was planted in the early spring but seems to be growing better then some garlic I had planted last fall already.  The onions were purchased as sets and also planted a couple of weeks ago.  Looking at them I’m wondering if I should have planted more.
